Abilene, KS - Rest Day

It's a lovely day in Abilene, Kansas, sunny and warm.

Rest day - what to do?  Clean bicycle - check.  Eat breakfast - check.  Take a nap - check.  Now what?

I know, I'll go for a bicycle ride.  In 2009, I missed the Greyhound Museum in Abilene, so off to the dogs.  Did you think it was a bus museum?  It turns out the National Greyhound Association is headquartered in Kansas and there are many breeding kennels located in the state.

After my visit to the museum, I pedaled around town taking in the sights.  There are many beautiful homes in Abilene - I was told they were built with cattle money from when Abilene was an important rail head for Texas longhorns driven up the Chisholm Trail for shipment back east.  The old, downtown is fairly deserted, typical of many small towns.  All of the chain stores and fast food places are located outside of town near the highway - very sad.

This is Ginger.

 Painting a very nice duplex.

    1. The National Greyhound Association (NGA), which operates the national registry of racing greyhounds, is located in Abilene. There are more than fifty greyhound breeding farms in the state.

  3. Sounds like you had a fun day. Getting to explore your surroundings at a slower pace and off your bike.

It's not a rest day for me though! I must toss the (fill in the blank) for the Phoebus.

  4. Sadly, greyhounds are cast aside when they no longer are good for racing. Happily, there are kind folk who rescue and adopt them.

    Ride On!
